Man United shortlist Emery, Nagelsmann as potential replacements for Carrick
Manchester United have reportedly identified Unai Emery and Julian Nagelsmann as potential replacements for head coach Michael Carrick should the club decide to end his tenure at Old Trafford.
The reported development comes amid mounting pressure on Carrick following a disappointing run of results that has intensified scrutiny of his position.
According to reports, both Emery and Nagelsmann are admired by members of the United board and are being considered as possible successors if the club decides to make a managerial change.
United’s struggles have reportedly included a 4-1 defeat to Como in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, further raising questions about Carrick’s future.
The result came amid a difficult spell for the Red Devils, who have reportedly gone seven matches in all competitions without a victory.

Despite the growing uncertainty, Carrick is still expected to lead United in their Premier League home fixture against Bournemouth on Sunday.
However, the defeat to Como has increased attention on the club’s contingency plans should the former United midfielder be dismissed.
Emery, who currently manages Aston Villa, is among the names reportedly under consideration. The Spanish tactician has established himself in English football, although his contract with Villa runs until 2029.
Nagelsmann is another candidate admired by United officials. The German coach left his previous club role to take charge of Germany’s national team and remained in the position following Euro 2024. His current employment status, however, would need to be verified.
United’s reported interest in the two managers suggests the club may be examining its options as pressure mounts on Carrick.
For now, Carrick is expected to remain in charge for the Bournemouth encounter, with the outcome and the team’s subsequent performances potentially influencing discussions about his future.
The club has not officially announced a decision to dismiss Carrick or confirmed that either Emery or Nagelsmann has been approached over the position.
