Manchester City bolster defence with German star

Manchester City have completed the signing of Germany international Carlotta Wamser from Bayer Leverkusen on a four-year contract, strengthening their squad ahead of the new Women’s Super League season.

The 22-year-old defender, who can operate at both right-back and left-back, becomes City’s third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Niamh Charles from Chelsea and Beth Mead from Arsenal.

Wamser’s arrival comes at an important time for the WSL champions, who are dealing with a number of injuries ahead of their title defence. Charles, Grace Clinton, Vivianne Miedema, Jade Rose and Laura Wienroither are among those currently unavailable.

City begin their WSL campaign at home against Birmingham City on Sunday, making Wamser an important addition as manager Gareth Taylor’s side look to retain their league title.

Wamser joined Bayer Leverkusen from Eintracht Frankfurt on a free transfer in July 2025 and has since established herself as one of Germany’s promising young defenders.

She has earned 14 senior international caps after progressing through Germany’s youth teams and was part of the country’s victorious Under-17 European Championship squad in 2019.

Speaking after completing her move, Wamser said she was excited about the opportunity to continue developing in England.

“I had a perfect welcome here and I already feel very good here and I look forward to my time here in Manchester,” she said.

“The English league is the best league in the world and Manchester City is one of the best clubs in the world.

“I feel like I need the next step for my career and I feel that I can develop as a player here. And I like the challenge as well, so I think it’s the perfect step for me right now.”

City director of football Therese Sjogran said the club had admired Wamser for some time and believes she can make a strong contribution to the team.

“We are delighted to welcome Carlotta to the club,” Sjogran said.

“She is a player we’ve admired for some time and know she will bring energy, passion and a willingness to learn to the team.”

Sjogran added that Wamser’s decision to join City reflected the club’s ambitions for the future.

“For such a young, exciting talent to trust us with the next step of her career is something we feel conveys a strong message of what we are building here,” she said.

The move gives City greater defensive depth as they prepare for another demanding campaign on domestic and European fronts. Wamser will now compete for a place in a squad determined to begin their WSL title defence strongly.
