Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has reflected on her time at Mavin Records, describing the label as a family and praising the support system she enjoyed under music executive Don Jazzy.

Speaking on the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, the singer explained that she did not fully appreciate the importance of a supportive record label until after leaving Mavin.

According to Tiwa, she often relied on Don Jazzy and her former label mates for emotional support whenever she faced public controversies.

“Who you sign to is very important, and I didn’t appreciate it until after I left Mavin,” she said.

She recalled how she would often visit Don Jazzy’s room to discuss personal struggles with other Mavin artistes, adding that the environment felt more like a family than a business arrangement.

“Whenever there was controversy online, I would run to Don Jazzy’s room, sit with the others, cry if I needed to cry, and we would get through it together,” she stated.

Tiwa contrasted that experience with her current relationship with foreign labels, saying international music companies are often more business-focused and less emotionally involved in artists’ personal lives.

“You can’t really go to the Empire office and cry,” she added.

Tiwa Savage joined Mavin Records in 2012 before leaving the label in 2019 to sign with Universal Music Group.
