Merson doubts Arsenal’s Champions League chances, blames lack of ‘X factor’ signing

Former England international Paul Merson has expressed doubts over Arsenal’s chances of winning the UEFA Champions League this season, arguing that the Gunners failed to make the marquee attacking signing needed to compete with Europe’s elite.

Merson believes Arsenal have assembled a squad capable of challenging strongly for the Premier League title but may struggle to go all the way in Europe because of what he described as a missing “X factor” in their attack.

Arsenal enjoyed an impressive Champions League campaign last season and are expected to be among the leading contenders again. However, Merson believes their inability to recruit a proven difference-maker could ultimately prevent them from lifting the trophy.

The Gunners were strongly linked with several high-profile forwards during the summer transfer window, including Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior and Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez. Despite the speculation, Arsenal failed to secure either player before the start of the new campaign.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson acknowledged Arsenal’s strong European record but questioned whether their current forward line possesses enough individual brilliance to overcome the continent’s biggest clubs.

“Arsenal’s record last year was amazing in the Champions League and they’re going to be there or thereabouts again – but I don’t think they bought that X factor signing to take them to that next level,” Merson said.

He argued that Arsenal’s existing squad should be strong enough to mount a serious Premier League challenge, but warned that the demands of Champions League knockout football are different.

“They have enough to win the Premier League with their squad. I just think the forward line against the big boys, they’re missing that little ingredient,” he added.

Merson specifically identified Vinicius and Alvarez as the type of players who could have transformed Arsenal’s attacking options and provided an additional threat against the strongest European sides.

“If they’d had a Vinicius Junior or a Julian Alvarez, that would have given them the edge to go on and win the Champions League,” he said.

His assessment highlights the growing expectation surrounding Arsenal, who have strengthened their squad but now face pressure to convert their progress into major silverware.

For Merson, the issue is not necessarily the overall quality of Arsenal’s squad, but whether they possess a match-winner capable of deciding tight Champions League encounters when margins are extremely small.

“I think they might just fall short,” the former Arsenal midfielder concluded.

Arsenal will therefore enter the Champions League campaign with significant expectations, but Merson’s warning suggests that their European ambitions could ultimately depend on whether their existing attackers can provide the decisive moments required against the continent’s best teams.
