Night ends in tragedy as woman dies in Uyo house fire

A woman has reportedly lost her life after a fire engulfed a residential building along Ikpa Road in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, during the early hours of Wednesday, raising fresh concerns about fire safety and emergency response in densely populated neighbourhoods of the state capital.

According to eyewitness accounts and information shared by residents, the blaze broke out at about 5:30 a.m., rapidly spreading through parts of the building and destroying several household items before it was brought under control.

While details surrounding the incident remain unclear, reports circulating on social media claimed that the woman had earlier met a man at a nightclub and later accompanied him to his residence for the night. However, authorities have not confirmed this account, and the identities of the individuals involved have not been officially released.

Residents said the man reportedly escaped from the building when the fire started, while the woman was allegedly trapped inside. Efforts by neighbours and other responders to gain access to the affected apartment were said to have been unsuccessful before the victim succumbed to the fire.

A resident of the area, who asked not to be named, described the scene as chaotic, saying people were awakened by screams and thick smoke coming from the building.

“We rushed outside when we noticed smoke and flames. People tried to help, but the fire spread very quickly. By the time access was gained, the woman could not be rescued,” the resident said.

The incident has generated widespread reactions across Uyo, with many residents expressing sympathy for the victim’s family and calling for a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire.

As of the time of filing this report, the Akwa Ibom State Police Command had not issued an official statement confirming the death or the circumstances leading to the outbreak. Fire service officials were also yet to release findings on what may have triggered the blaze.

Authorities are expected to begin a formal investigation to determine whether the fire resulted from an electrical fault, cooking appliance, combustible materials or any other factor.
