Ogun Police kill suspected kidnap leader, seize rifle, N2m

Operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Ogun State Police Command have neutralised a suspected kidnapping kingpin during an intelligence-led raid on a criminal hideout in the Orile Ilugun Forest axis along the Abeokuta–Ibadan Expressway.

The early morning operation, which followed days of surveillance and investigation, also led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle loaded with 20 rounds of 5.6mm ammunition, N2 million in cash, and two mobile phones believed to belong to members of the criminal syndicate.

According to the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the breakthrough came shortly after the safe release of a kidnapping victim who had been abducted on May 14, 2026, at Nufats Fuel Station along the Abeokuta–Ibadan Expressway in Odeda Local Government Area.

The victim was freed unharmed on May 18, 2026, at about 8:30 p.m.

Following the victim’s release, the Anti-Kidnapping Squad intensified intelligence-driven efforts to track down the gang responsible for the abduction.

Acting on credible intelligence, operatives stormed the kidnappers’ hideout at about 6:00 a.m. on May 19, 2026, within the Orile Ilugun Forest corridor.

Police sources said that upon sighting the operatives, the suspected kidnappers opened fire, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.

The police team reportedly responded with what was described as superior tactical firepower, resulting in the neutralisation of the gang’s kingpin. Other members of the syndicate fled into the forest with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.

Items recovered at the scene included one AK-47 rifle loaded with 20 rounds of 5.6mm ammunition, N2 million suspected to be ransom proceeds, and two mobile phones.

The body of the neutralised suspect has been deposited at a morgue for autopsy in line with standard procedure, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing members of the gang.

The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, commended the gallantry, professionalism and resilience displayed by the operatives during the operation.

He reiterated the Command’s unwavering commitment to combating kidnapping and other violent crimes across Ogun State, assuring residents that security agencies remain determined to dismantle criminal networks operating within forested corridors and major highways.

The Command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or criminal activities.
