Omo-Agege alleges assassination attempt, blames Oborevwori’s supporters  

Former Deputy President of the 9th Senate and National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has alleged that armed men linked to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori attempted to assassinate him during a political tour in Usiefrun, Ughelli South Local Government Area.

Omo-Agege, in a statement issued on Friday, August 14, 2026, said the alleged attack occurred on Thursday while he, the NDC governorship candidate, Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, and other party leaders were on a ward-to-ward tour of Delta Central.

He claimed that six NDC members were injured when armed men allegedly opened fire on party supporters gathered to welcome the delegation.

According to Omo-Agege, the incident was a continuation of what he described as a “coordinated campaign of violence” ahead of the 2027 elections.

He recalled that he had raised concerns on July 29 over previous incidents, including the alleged attack on Iyovwaye in Agholokpe and an incident involving Hon. Simon Mudi, popularly known as “Temple,” at the Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun.

“Yesterday, Thursday, August 13, 2026, armed men affiliated with the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, attempted to take my life in Usiefrun, Ughelli South LGA,” Omo-Agege alleged.

He added that the attackers also targeted Iyovwaye and other members of the NDC leadership but “by God’s grace, they failed.”

The injured persons were identified by Omo-Agege as Believe Biadoyo, Joshua Oghenetega Oyibocha, Owhos Peter, Ojiyovwin Dennis and two others.

Omo-Agege Names Suspects

Omo-Agege alleged that eyewitness accounts and video evidence had identified four persons as masterminds of the attack.

They were Simon Mudi, also known as “Temple,” whom he described as a protocol officer to Governor Oborevwori; Flash Oghenetega Origbon; Ochuko Origbon; and Alex Awherhurho.

He alleged that the four are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State.

The senator called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Delta State Commissioner of Police to investigate the incident and prosecute anyone found culpable.

He also demanded that the state government suspend and hand over to the police any government appointee found to be connected to the alleged attack.

Omo-Agege further urged the police, Department of State Services (DSS) and other relevant authorities to investigate the reported incidents in Agholokpe, Effurun and Usiefrun as potentially connected events.

NDC Campaign to Continue

Despite the alleged attack, Omo-Agege said the NDC would not suspend its ward-to-ward campaign across Delta Central.

He appealed to NDC supporters and other residents of the state not to retaliate, urging them instead to remain committed to peaceful political engagement.

“We refuse to be intimidated or silenced. Our ward-to-ward visits across Delta Central Senatorial District will continue,” he said.

He also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), civil society organisations and the international community to pay closer attention to the security situation in Delta Central and deploy observers ahead of the 2027 elections.

Omo-Agege gave Governor Oborevwori 48 hours to publicly condemn the alleged attack and ensure that those responsible are arrested, warning that failure to do so would be interpreted as complicity.

“Silence will be seen as complicity,” he said.

He nevertheless urged his supporters not to resort to violence, saying the party would continue to campaign on its ideas and record.

“This is no longer politics. It is a well-orchestrated campaign of violence and attempted murder,” Omo-Agege alleged.
