OPay seeks DSS, Police probe into fake shutdown rumours

Digital payments company OPay has called for an investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force into false reports circulating on social media claiming that the fintech company is shutting down its operations in Nigeria.

OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, disclosed this on Wednesday during a press conference in Lagos, saying the company had provided evidence to the relevant security agencies to help identify those behind the publication.

Rokosu said the DSS and police were already investigating the matter, while OPay was cooperating with the authorities. He added that the company had commenced action against those responsible for creating and circulating what it described as harmful and false information.

According to him, OPay would pursue the matter through the appropriate legal channels and seek to ensure that anyone deliberately responsible for the misinformation faces the consequences provided by law.

The development followed a viral notice that circulated online over the weekend claiming that OPay would begin an indefinite shutdown of its Nigerian operations from September 1, 2026. The purported notice advised customers to withdraw their funds and claimed that transactions and account-related services would be suspended.

OPay had earlier dismissed the publication as false and urged customers to disregard it. The company said the notice contained several inconsistencies, including an incorrect logo, spelling errors and an unfamiliar communication format, indicating that it did not originate from OPay.

Speaking at Wednesday’s press conference, OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technology Officer, Dotun Adekunle, again assured customers that the company remained fully operational and had no plans to shut down its Nigerian operations.

Adekunle urged customers not to make financial decisions based on unverified messages shared on social media or messaging platforms, stressing the importance of checking OPay’s official communication channels before acting on such information.

The company’s response comes as concerns over misinformation affecting financial institutions continue to grow, particularly where false claims could trigger panic withdrawals or undermine public confidence in digital payment platforms.

OPay has therefore reiterated that its services remain operational and advised customers to rely on verified company channels for updates regarding its services.
