Police arrest five suspected armed robbers, recover firearms in Ibadan raid

Operatives of the Oyo State Police Command have arrested five suspected armed robbers and recovered weapons, ammunition, and suspected criminal charms during a raid on a hideout in Ibadan.

The operation was carried out in the early hours of Friday in the Gbeku area of Olodo, Egbeda Local Government Area, following intelligence reports on the activities of a suspected armed robbery syndicate operating in the area.

Confirming the development in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, said officers stormed the residence of a suspected gang leader identified as Surajudeen Babatunde Adio, popularly known as “Surii Ilupeju,” who was allegedly using the location as a base for criminal operations.

According to the police, five suspects were arrested during the operation. They were identified as Ahmed Nafiu, 43; Olukunmi Olaniyi, 36; Femi Odeyinde, 53; Jelili Akinade, 50; and Muhideen Adio, 27.

A search of the premises led to the recovery of a pump-action gun, a cut-to-size single-barrel firearm, and eight live cartridges. Officers also recovered a native bulletproof vest, two bottles containing suspected charm-related substances, and other items believed to be used in criminal activities.

The police said the suspects are currently in custody and are assisting investigators with ongoing inquiries aimed at uncovering the full extent of the syndicate’s operations.

Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating violent crimes across the state, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and cult-related activities.

He said intelligence-led operations would continue to target criminal hideouts and networks, while urging residents to support security agencies by providing useful and timely information.

The command assured members of the public that efforts are ongoing to ensure the safety of lives and property across Oyo State.
