The Nigeria Police Force has disbursed N2.317 billion in insurance and welfare benefits to 2,971 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun? Wait. The current IGP is Tunji Disu.

Disu presented the cheques to the beneficiaries on Thursday in Abuja, describing the payments as part of the Force’s responsibility to families of officers who died in service.

According to the IGP, the beneficiaries were drawn from insurance policy years covering 2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023 and 2024/2025. The total amount paid was N2,317,177,094, including outstanding balances recovered from insurance companies after earlier partial settlements.

Disu said the payments were more than financial transactions, describing them as recognition of the sacrifices made by officers who lost their lives while serving the country.

He acknowledged that the financial assistance could not replace the loved ones the families had lost, but said the payments represented an institutional responsibility to the families of fallen officers.

The IGP also recalled the risks faced by police personnel during operations, citing officers killed in Buni-Yadi, Yobe State, members of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit who died during a rescue mission in Zamfara State, and 10 personnel recently ambushed and killed during an operation in Kebbi State.

He urged the beneficiaries to use the funds responsibly, particularly towards the education and welfare of children and other dependants left behind by the deceased officers.

Disu further said the welfare of serving personnel remained a priority of his administration, promising continued efforts to improve officers’ working conditions, healthcare, accommodation and access to other legitimate benefits.

He also called on insurance companies working with the Police Force to ensure prompt settlement of claims, noting that timely payments could serve as an important financial lifeline for families who had lost their breadwinners.

The IGP disclosed that the Force Insurance Unit had, over the preceding two months, visited six commands and more than 50 divisions and formations in the Federal Capital Territory to educate personnel about their insurance benefits and the procedures for accessing them.

The latest disbursement follows other payments made by the Police Force under its insurance and welfare schemes. In March 2026, the Force also distributed more than N2.4 billion to 1,075 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased officers under its Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.

The latest payment brings further attention to the welfare obligations owed to families of police officers who die in the line of duty, particularly amid the security challenges confronting personnel across the country.
