A police officer has died in a fatal road crash on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State after a Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle reportedly rammed into his motorcycle.

The accident occurred on Sunday at the Adekunle inward Iyana-Oworo section of the bridge, involving a Lexus Jeep with registration number EPE 765 JN and a Bajaj motorcycle ridden by the officer.

The impact of the collision was said to have been severe, with the officer confirmed dead at the scene before emergency responders arrived.

In a statement, the spokesperson of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, described the incident as tragic, noting that the driver of the Lexus vehicle later reported himself at the Adekunle Police Division after the crash.

Following the accident, personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and LASTMA officials were swiftly deployed to the scene to manage traffic and secure the area, preventing further incidents.

Authorities cordoned off the affected section of the bridge to avert secondary crashes while evacuation operations were carried out to clear the damaged vehicles and restore traffic flow.

Despite the severity of the crash, LASTMA said traffic on the bridge was effectively managed through coordinated efforts by security and traffic agencies deployed to the scene.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, urged motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and avoid reckless driving, warning that such behaviour continues to contribute to avoidable road fatalities in Lagos State.

He also emphasised the need for responsible road use and strict compliance with traffic regulations to safeguard lives and ensure safer highways across the state.
