Police reveal details of alleged self-kidnap scheme in Lagos
The Lagos State Police Command has uncovered an alleged staged kidnapping plot involving a scrap iron dealer who reportedly orchestrated his own abduction after losing his employer’s money to fraudsters.
The incident, which initially triggered concerns over rising insecurity and kidnapping in the state, took a dramatic turn after investigators discovered that the supposed victim had allegedly collaborated with accomplices to fabricate the crime and demand a ransom from his employer.
According to police authorities, the suspect, identified simply as Abdullahi, allegedly conspired with two panel beaters to create a false kidnapping scenario designed to convince his employer that he had fallen into the hands of kidnappers.
The case began on May 19, 2026, when a man identified as Abubakar reported the disappearance of his brother to the police, prompting an immediate investigation and search operation.
The situation escalated when a disturbing video surfaced online showing Abdullahi being beaten with wooden planks by unidentified individuals.
In the footage, the alleged kidnappers threatened to kill him unless a ransom of N1.5 million was paid by his employer.
Given the growing wave of kidnapping incidents across parts of the country, the police initially treated the matter as a genuine abduction case and deployed detectives to locate the victim and track down those responsible.

However, as investigations progressed, detectives reportedly observed several inconsistencies in the video and the circumstances surrounding the alleged kidnapping. These discrepancies prompted investigators to subject the case to closer scrutiny.
Speaking on the development, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Fatai Tijani, said detectives’ uncovered contradictions during their analysis of the evidence.
“Upon careful analysis of the video and subsequent investigation, detectives discovered several inconsistencies,” the police commissioner stated.
He added that further interrogation of the suspect eventually led to a confession.
“The suspect was subjected to further interrogation and eventually confessed that the kidnapping was staged,” Tijani disclosed.
According to police findings, Abdullahi admitted that the fake abduction was orchestrated to divert attention from the disappearance of N490,000 that had been entrusted to him by his employer for business transactions.
Investigators revealed that the suspect allegedly lost the money to fraudsters and, fearing the consequences of explaining the loss to his employer, devised the kidnapping scheme as a cover-up.
The police further disclosed that Abdullahi confessed to acting in collaboration with accomplices who remain at large. Efforts are currently underway to track down and arrest the other individuals allegedly involved in the plot.
During the course of the investigation, detectives reportedly recovered the N490,000, a development that strengthened the case against the suspect and provided additional insight into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Investigators also visited the workshop where the video depicting the alleged kidnapping was reportedly recorded as part of efforts to gather further evidence and establish the roles played by other suspects.
The Lagos State Police Command has assured residents that investigations remain ongoing and that all individuals connected to the alleged conspiracy will be apprehended and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
