Port Harcourt youths protest alleged Police killing of 22-year-Old UNIPORT graduate

Youths took to the streets of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Monday, August 31, demanding justice over the alleged police shooting and death of 22-year-old Anthony Eruchi Obodo, a graduate of the University of Port Harcourt awaiting his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) call-up.

The protesters blocked parts of Agip Road around Ada-George, expressing anger over Obodo’s death during an encounter with police officers on August 27.

The demonstrators demanded a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and called for appropriate action against the police officer allegedly responsible.

The protest has renewed concerns over alleged police brutality and the use of force against civilians in Rivers State, with the protesters insisting that justice must be served.

Responding to the development, the Rivers State Police Command confirmed that the officer allegedly involved, identified as CPL Alfred Louis, and members of his team had been detained.

The command said the officers were transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for investigation and possible disciplinary action.

The police authorities’ decision to investigate the incident is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding Obodo’s death and establish responsibility.

Meanwhile, the incident has continued to generate public concern, particularly among youths and residents demanding greater accountability from law enforcement agencies.
