A viral video showing heaps of refuse littering Broad Street in the Lagos Island Central Business District (CBD) has sparked concerns among residents and commuters over poor waste management and the alleged lack of public waste bins in the area.

The video captures waste scattered along sections of the busy commercial street, raising questions about sanitation, refuse collection and the responsibilities of relevant authorities in maintaining cleanliness in the commercial hub.

Residents seen or heard in the video reportedly lamented the absence of adequate waste bins, blaming the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the local council for the situation.

They called for urgent intervention to clear the refuse and provide appropriate waste disposal facilities to prevent further accumulation.

Broad Street is one of the prominent commercial corridors on Lagos Island, attracting traders, workers, business owners and visitors daily. The reported waste build-up has therefore raised concerns about the area’s environmental condition and the experience of people who work and conduct business there.

The complaints also highlight the challenges of managing waste in densely populated commercial districts, where large volumes of refuse are generated daily.

Residents’ concerns centre on the availability of waste bins, regular refuse collection and the need for effective monitoring to discourage indiscriminate dumping.

The situation has renewed calls for LAWMA and the relevant local government authorities to strengthen sanitation operations, provide accessible waste disposal points and ensure timely evacuation of accumulated refuse.

However, the allegations contained in the viral video have not been independently verified, and no official response from LAWMA or the local council was available at the time of writing.

Residents are urging the relevant authorities to address the situation promptly to restore cleanliness and protect public health in the Lagos Island business district.
