Ronaldo suspended for 30 days, fined €255 over Portugal camp exit
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly been handed a 30-day suspension and fined €255 by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) following his departure from the national team’s training camp in Copenhagen, Denmark, amid a reported disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus.
The disciplinary action followed an incident on September 30, when the 41-year-old forward left the camp ahead of Portugal’s Nations League fixture against Denmark, triggering an investigation by the federation.
According to reports published on Monday, the FPF’s disciplinary authorities concluded the proceedings and imposed the sanctions after examining the circumstances surrounding Ronaldo’s departure.
The controversy reportedly stemmed from disagreements over the former Real Madrid and Manchester United star’s playing time and an alleged understanding with Jesus concerning his participation in Portugal’s international fixtures.
Ronaldo was reportedly frustrated after remaining an unused substitute during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway in Oslo on September 27, despite warming up for an extended period.
The forward allegedly believed an arrangement with the coach would allow him to feature in the opening match of the international window and the final home fixture, while being rested for away matches.
Ronaldo subsequently claimed that Jesus had asked whether he was capable of playing approximately 30 minutes against Norway and that he had indicated his readiness. However, he was not introduced into the game.
Tensions reportedly deepened after Jesus addressed the matter publicly, with Ronaldo believing the coach’s comments differed from their private discussions.

The disagreement culminated in Ronaldo’s departure from Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen on September 30.
The FPF subsequently opened disciplinary proceedings to determine whether his action violated regulations governing players called up to represent the national team.
On October 10, the federation reportedly classified the case as urgent and imposed a preventive suspension pending further investigation. The matter was referred to its Disciplinary Investigation Commission.
The eventual 30-day suspension and €255 fine followed that process, according to the reports.
Ronaldo accepts responsibility
Ronaldo reportedly acknowledged that leaving the camp was a serious decision and apologised to his teammates, the national team and the Portuguese public over the circumstances surrounding his departure.
He also accepted that his position as captain carried responsibilities beyond his performances on the pitch, including the obligation to set an example for other players.
The forward indicated his willingness to accept the consequences of his actions, while maintaining that the incident should not be interpreted as an announcement of his retirement from international football.
He remains willing to represent Portugal, subject to his fitness, form and the resolution of the disciplinary matter.
Future with Portugal under scrutiny
The incident has raised questions about Ronaldo’s relationship with Jesus and whether both men can resolve their differences ahead of the forward’s return to international duty.
While team selection remains the coach’s responsibility, the reported dispute has highlighted the importance of communication between managers and senior players.
Ronaldo’s sister, Elma Aveiro, has also reportedly expressed concern about the situation, suggesting that the disagreement could complicate his return to the national team.
Nevertheless, the suspension and fine relate to the circumstances surrounding his departure from camp and do not, in themselves, constitute an announcement that his international career has ended.
The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Ronaldo and the coaching staff can move beyond the controversy as Portugal continues its international campaign.
