Organisers of The Headies have announced that the 18th edition of the prestigious award ceremony will take place in Toronto.

The announcement was made during a special event titled “The Big Announcement,” held at Eko Hotels & Suites, where major stakeholders in the entertainment industry gathered to hear plans for the upcoming edition.

Founder of the Headies, Ayo Animashaun, confirmed that the main award ceremony would be hosted in Canada as part of efforts to further expand the global reach of African music and increase international visibility for African artists.

Despite the international venue, Animashaun assured Nigerian audiences that they would remain actively involved in the event through planned watch parties and a special joint broadcast linking audiences in Toronto and Lagos simultaneously.

He also addressed criticism surrounding the decision to host the awards outside Nigeria once again, stressing that sponsorship and financial support are critical to the sustainability and growth of the brand.

According to him, the ability to secure partnerships and funding opportunities largely determines the scale and location of the event.

Animashaun questioned whether the alternative would be to stop hosting the awards entirely if adequate support is unavailable, emphasizing that international expansion requires significant investment.

The organisers have yet to announce the official date for the 2026 edition, but additional details are expected in the coming months
