Tim Cook has stepped down as Chief Executive Officer of Apple after 15 years at the helm, ending one of the most consequential leadership eras in the history of the technology industry.

Cook, who succeeded Apple co-founder Steve Jobs as CEO in August 2011, leaves after overseeing a dramatic expansion of the company and helping transform it into a global technology, services and entertainment powerhouse.

When Cook assumed the position, Apple had a market capitalisation of about $347 billion. By the end of his tenure, the company’s value had surged to approximately $4.6 trillion, reflecting an extraordinary expansion in its global economic influence.

Rather than attempting to replicate Jobs’ highly charismatic and product-focused leadership style, Cook pursued a different strategy centred on operational efficiency, services, supply-chain management and long-term growth.

One of Cook’s most important contributions was reducing Apple’s reliance on hardware sales.

Under his leadership, the company significantly expanded its services business, including the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud and Apple TV+, creating substantial recurring revenue streams and deepening customer engagement with the Apple ecosystem.

Apple also broadened its hardware portfolio with products such as the Apple Watch and AirPods, while investing heavily in its own semiconductor technology.

The development of Apple’s in-house silicon chips gave the company greater control over the performance and design of its devices while reducing its dependence on external chip suppliers.

The broader strategy was to ensure that Apple’s products, software and services worked together to keep customers within the company’s ecosystem.

The Operations Expert

Cook’s influence on Apple, however, began long before he became CEO.

As a senior executive under Jobs, he played a major role in restructuring Apple’s supply chain and manufacturing operations, helping the company improve efficiency and manage its global production network.

That operational expertise became a defining feature of his tenure as CEO.

Cook’s leadership demonstrated that Apple’s success was not based solely on innovative products but also on its ability to manufacture at scale, distribute products globally, retain customers and generate sustained revenue from services.

A Leadership Style of His Own

Cook also established a leadership style markedly different from that of Jobs.

While Jobs was known for dramatic product launches and a commanding public presence, Cook generally adopted a quieter and more execution-focused approach.

His tenure coincided with Apple’s evolution from a company primarily associated with computers and smartphones into a diversified technology ecosystem encompassing hardware, software, digital services, entertainment and financial offerings.

The model enabled Apple to create stronger links between its products and services, encouraging customers to remain deeply connected to the company’s ecosystem.

Ternus Takes Over

Cook’s departure does not mark the end of his association with Apple.

He will become the company’s executive chairman, while John Ternus succeeds him as CEO on September 1.

Ternus takes charge of a company with a valuation measured in trillions of dollars, a vast international customer base and one of the world’s most powerful technology ecosystems.

For Cook, the contrast between the beginning and end of his tenure offers a striking measure of Apple’s transformation.

The company was worth about $347 billion when he became CEO.

It is now valued at approximately $4.6 trillion.

Cook inherited Apple’s most difficult challenge — sustaining the company’s momentum after Steve Jobs — and answered it by pursuing his own vision.

He did not attempt to become the next Steve Jobs.

He became Tim Cook, and under his leadership, Apple grew into an even larger force in global business.
