President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Nigeria’s new Minister of Foreign Affairs, following the resignation of Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who stepped down ahead of an anticipated political move toward the 2027 general elections.

In a related development, the President also nominated Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, subject to confirmation by the Senate.

The appointments were announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.

“These adjustments are part of ongoing efforts to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy architecture for greater efficiency, strategic engagement, and stronger global partnerships,” the statement read.

Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu, a seasoned diplomat and former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, is expected to assume leadership of Nigeria’s external relations at a time when the Tinubu administration is prioritizing economic diplomacy, regional security, and expanded international cooperation. The presidency highlighted her extensive experience in international affairs and familiarity with Nigeria’s diplomatic landscape.

“Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu brings decades of diplomatic experience and a deep understanding of Nigeria’s engagement with the global community,” the statement added.

Her appointment is seen as a strategic move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s global presence and fostering partnerships that can drive trade, investment, and sustainable development.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Enikanolaiye, a career diplomat, previously served as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations. Over the course of his diplomatic career, he has held postings in Addis Ababa, London, Ottawa, Belgrade, and New Delhi.

The presidency described his nomination as a step toward reinforcing institutional continuity and professional expertise within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“Ambassador Enikanolaiye’s extensive experience across multiple diplomatic missions will support Nigeria’s evolving foreign policy objectives,” the statement noted.

President Tinubu congratulated both appointees and urged them to uphold Nigeria’s national interest, deepen economic diplomacy, and ensure improved welfare and protection for Nigerians in the diaspora.

The appointments are expected to usher in a renewed diplomatic push as the administration seeks to align Nigeria’s foreign engagements with its broader economic and development priorities.
