The Nigerian Army has arrested five suspects, including a wanted commander known as “Calamity,” in connection with the killing of a police officer in Delta State earlier this year.
The suspects were apprehended during an early morning raid on April 21, 2026, in Nwofe community, Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The operation was carried out by troops under Operation UDO KA, part of ongoing security efforts to curb violent crime in the South-East and adjoining regions.
Military authorities said the arrests are tied to an attack that occurred on February 26, 2026, in Okuku-Igbo, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State. During the incident, gunmen ambushed police officers, killing one and leaving another seriously injured, while also carting away service rifles.
The lead suspect, Chinedu Igautu, is believed to be a commander linked to the Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network.
According to military sources, the group relocated from Delta State to Ebonyi following increased security pressure, where they allegedly attempted to regroup and continue their operations.
During the raid, troops recovered several items from the suspects’ hideout, including mobile phones, keys, and a motorcycle believed to have been used in previous operations. The materials are expected to aid ongoing investigations.
The Nigerian Army said the suspects are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation, with efforts underway to track other members of the network and recover stolen weapons.
Authorities described the operation as a significant step in disrupting criminal groups operating across state boundaries, and called on residents to continue providing timely information to support security operations.
