Security operatives deployed to the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, in Plateau State, have foiled another attempted attack on the institution, neutralizing one suspected gunman during a late-night gun battle.

The attempted attack occurred on Wednesday, July 1, when a group of armed men reportedly tried to breach the security perimeter of the country’s foremost policy and leadership training institute.

In a statement issued by the Head of Public Affairs at NIPSS, Dr. Osime Samuel, the attackers were met with stiff resistance from security personnel stationed at the facility.

According to the statement, the coordinated response by the security team forced the assailants to retreat after an exchange of gunfire.

“The attackers engaged security operatives in a gun duel but were forced to retreat following the swift and coordinated response of the security forces. One of the assailants was neutralized during the encounter, while others were reported to have escaped with varying degrees of injuries,” the statement read.

Dr. Samuel said there was no breach of the institute’s security perimeter, adding that all participants, staff, residents and facilities within the campus remained safe.

“The Institute is pleased to report that there was no breach of the security perimeter. All participants, staff, residents, and facilities remain safe and secure,” he added.

The latest incident comes less than three weeks after suspected gunmen launched a deadly attack on the institute’s staff quarters, killing two soldiers and a police officer attached to the facility before fleeing the scene.

Following the June attack, the Federal Government reinforced security around the institution by deploying additional military and police personnel while strengthening surveillance around the Kuru axis.

NIPSS is regarded as Nigeria’s premier policy think tank, where senior civil servants, military officers, law enforcement personnel and other top public officials undergo strategic leadership and policy development programmes.

Meanwhile, security agencies have intensified search operations across Jos South Local Government Area and adjoining communities in a bid to track down the fleeing suspects. Surveillance has also been extended to hospitals and clinics where injured members of the fleeing gang may seek medical attention.

Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or security concerns to the appropriate agencies as efforts continue to strengthen security around the institution.
