Two die after refuse dump collapses on building in Calabar
Two people have died after a refuse dump collapsed onto a building at Ikot Effanga, along the Old Odukpani Road in Calabar, Cross River State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 28, 2026, according to the Cross River State Police Command. Police personnel who responded to the scene found that the collapsed refuse had struck a building reportedly constructed within a valley, killing two occupants.
The victims were identified as Nfon Imé, a man, and an unidentified woman. Their bodies were recovered and deposited at a mortuary, police said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the command had commenced an assessment of the circumstances surrounding the incident, with further investigation ongoing.
The police urged residents to remain calm and avoid speculation while authorities work to establish the full circumstances that led to the collapse. Further details will be released once they are verified, the command said.
The incident comes amid broader concerns over landslides, erosion and flooding in parts of Cross River State, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall. Recent disasters in Calabar and surrounding communities have heightened calls for stronger measures to protect residents living in areas vulnerable to environmental hazards.
