Ugochukwu makes Nigerian heritage shine in formula 3 triumph

Nigerian-American racing driver Ugo Ugochukwu has made motorsport history after winning the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Championship, becoming the first American driver to claim the prestigious title.

The 19-year-old secured the championship at the final round of the season in Madrid, Spain, after finishing second in the decisive race. Driving for Campos Racing, Ugochukwu finished the campaign with 159 points, 14 points ahead of British rival Freddie Slater, who recorded 145 points.

The championship represents the biggest achievement of Ugochukwu’s rapidly developing motorsport career and strengthens his credentials as one of the sport’s most promising young drivers

FIA Formula 3 is widely regarded as a major pathway to Formula 1, with the championship serving as an important proving ground for emerging drivers seeking to reach the pinnacle of single-seater racing.

Ugochukwu began his racing career in karting as a child in New York before progressing through various junior single-seater categories. His breakthrough campaign in the 2026 FIA Formula 3 season was built on consistency and strong performances that eventually carried him to the championship.

Although Ugochukwu competes under an American racing licence and is officially recognised as an American driver, he has strong Nigerian heritage through his mother, Oluchi Onweagba.

Onweagba, a Nigerian-born international supermodel, gained prominence after participating in the Elite Model Look competition before establishing a successful career in the global fashion industry. Ugochukwu’s father, Luca Orlandi, is an Italian fashion designer.

His victory therefore carries significance beyond the United States, offering Nigerians and the wider African motorsport community a driver of Nigerian heritage competing successfully at one of the sport’s most important international levels.

For the United States, Ugochukwu’s triumph marks a historic first in FIA Formula 3. For Nigeria, his emergence provides a new connection to international motorsport at a time when the country’s sporting identity remains largely associated with football, athletics and boxing.
