UTME top scorer reveals how avoiding social medias, strict discipline boosted performance (Video)

A top-performing candidate in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) has shared insights into the disciplined study habits and personal sacrifices that contributed to his outstanding result, highlighting a strict decision to stay away from social media during preparation.

The examination, conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), remains one of the most competitive academic assessments in Nigeria, with millions of candidates vying for limited admission slots into tertiary institutions each year.

“Social Media Was a Distraction I Had to Cut Off”

Speaking on the strategies behind the performance, the candidate explained that limiting digital distractions played a major role in maintaining focus throughout the study period.

According to him, stepping back from social media helped create more time for revision and improved concentration.

He noted that what initially seemed like a harmless form of relaxation gradually became a major source of distraction, prompting a deliberate decision to disconnect in order to stay on track academically.

Beyond avoiding social media, the candidate also credited his success to a well-planned reading timetable, disciplined time management, and consistency in covering key subjects ahead of the examination.

He explained that his preparation involved daily study targets, regular revision sessions, and periodic self-assessment to track progress and identify weak areas.

The student further revealed that the preparation period required significant personal sacrifices, including reduced leisure activities and social engagements, in order to maintain academic focus.

He added that the competitive nature of the UTME pushed him to remain committed and intentional about every aspect of his preparation.

The candidate’s experience has added to ongoing conversations among students and educators about the impact of social media on academic performance, particularly during high-stakes examinations like the UTME.

Education stakeholders continue to emphasise the importance of discipline, structured learning, and balanced use of digital platforms as key factors in achieving academic success.
