Violence forces APC ward 10 primary in Ekiti inconclusive, supporters injured
Chaos erupted on Saturday at the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for Ward 10 held at Fajuyi Pavilion in Ado Local Government Area of Ekiti State, forcing electoral officials to halt the exercise and declare it inconclusive following a violent clash among party supporters.
The primary contest, which drew significant interest within the ward, was between Olushola Fatoba and Tope Ogunleye, popularly known as RST. Loyalists and agents of both aspirants had gathered early at the Fajuyi Pavilion ahead of the scheduled commencement of voting.
Eyewitnesses said tensions began to escalate when individuals described as suspected thugs allegedly aligned with Fatoba stormed the venue wielding canes and firearms. Their presence reportedly created an atmosphere of fear, with claims that the move was intended to intimidate supporters of Ogunleye and discourage participation.
Despite the hostile environment, Ogunleye’s supporters remained at the venue, chanting solidarity songs and expressing confidence in their candidate. Voting eventually commenced under tight security and heightened tension.

Observers at the scene noted that Ogunleye appeared to command significant backing among party members present, with his supporters reportedly outnumbering those of his opponent.
However, the situation deteriorated shortly after voting got underway. Witnesses alleged that violence broke out when it became apparent that Fatoba’s camp might be trailing in the contest. A clash between rival supporters ensued, prompting electoral officials to abruptly suspend the exercise.
During the melee, Ogunleye’s agent, identified as Mr. Sunday, was reportedly assaulted. Another supporter, Mr. Femi Ogunleye, was allegedly beaten and had his Tecno Spark 9 mobile phone forcefully taken. A female supporter, Mrs. Oluwaseun Osamuwa, was also attacked, with her Apple Smart Wrist Watch reportedly stolen in the process.
Both Mr. Femi Ogunleye and Mrs. Osamuwa sustained injuries and were rushed to a hospital for medical treatment. The extent of their injuries was not immediately disclosed.
As of press time, no winner had been declared, and the Ward 10 primary remained inconclusive.
The incident has reignited concerns over thuggery, intimidation, and violence in internal party elections, with party members and political observers warning that such disruptions undermine democratic processes.
Stakeholders have called on security agencies and party leadership to investigate the incident thoroughly, ensure justice for those assaulted, and put measures in place to guarantee credible and peaceful primaries in the future.
