Where next for Chelsea’s Delap as striker faces uncertain future?
Chelsea striker Liam Delap could leave Stamford Bridge just 14 months after joining the club from Ipswich Town, with his future increasingly uncertain ahead of the transfer deadline.
The 23-year-old moved to Chelsea last summer after the Blues triggered his £30m release clause, beating competition from Manchester United, Newcastle United and Everton.

However, after scoring only once in the Premier League last season, Delap is now considered surplus to requirements as Chelsea look to reduce a squad of around 40 players.
Interest in the England striker has so far been limited, with clubs understood to have reservations about Chelsea’s £50m asking price following his difficult first season in west London.
Nottingham Forest have shown interest, while Leeds United were also previously keen before cooling their pursuit.
Chelsea could be willing to negotiate later in the window, particularly as the club have already shown flexibility with defenders Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi, who are both set to leave on loan despite initially being available for permanent transfers.
Delap’s priority is understood to be regular first-team football, whether through a loan move or a permanent transfer.
Can Delap bounce back?
Delap’s difficult campaign came during a turbulent season for Chelsea, who finished 10th in the Premier League.
The striker worked under three different managers and was also affected by hamstring and shoulder injuries, which disrupted his physical style of play and contributed to a loss of confidence.
He has acknowledged that his performances fell below expectations but believes there were circumstances that contributed to his struggles.
Delap suffered another setback this week when he lost Chelsea’s No.9 shirt to João Pedro, who impressed after joining from Brighton during the same transfer window last summer.
Chelsea are also expected to have Emmanuel Emegha and Danny Welbeck competing for places in attack next season, making Delap’s route back into the first team even more difficult.
The striker has previously expressed a desire to remain at Chelsea and prove his worth, but his immediate priority is now to find a club where he can play consistently.
Chelsea’s squad overhaul
Delap is among around 12 players currently training separately from the main Chelsea group at Cobham as new manager Xabi Alonso works with a squad that is too large.
The club insists the arrangement is different from last season’s controversial “bomb squad” system, which saw players such as Raheem Sterling and Disasi train away from the first team.
Chelsea have stressed that the current group continues to use the same gym, changing facilities and dining areas as the first-team squad, while players can move between groups.
The club are attempting to reduce their squad to around 25 players, particularly with no European football this season.
Several departures are already progressing, with Disasi set for a medical at Crystal Palace, while Omari Kellyman and Deivid Washington are close to moves to Strasbourg. Badiashile is also undergoing a medical at Napoli.
Other players facing uncertain futures include Nicolas Jackson, Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana and Caleb Wiley.
For Delap, however, the biggest question is whether Chelsea will lower their £50m valuation enough to attract a serious buyer — and whether a move away from Stamford Bridge can provide the young striker with the platform needed to rebuild his confidence and revive his career.
