Why APC won all chairmanship, councillorship seats in Enugu LG polls

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a sweeping victory in the Enugu State local government elections, winning all 17 chairmanship and 260 councillors positions declared by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC).

The Chairman-elect of Enugu South Local Government Area, Chief Caleb Ani, attributed the party’s performance to what he described as the developmental strides of Governor Peter Mbah across the state.

Ani spoke on Sunday after receiving his certificate of return, following his victory in the election.

He said the outcome of the poll reflected the support generated by the administration’s projects and policies, urging residents to sustain the momentum by supporting Governor Mbah in the 2027 elections.

According to him, continued support for the governor would enable the administration to consolidate on its ongoing development programmes across Enugu State.

The APC State Chairman, Dr Martin Chukwunweike, also described the party’s victory as evidence of its growing presence in the state.

Chukwunweike said the party would continue to support the developmental programmes of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Mbah.

“We will not rest as we push the developmental efforts of President Bola Tinubu and our amiable governor for the world to see,” he said.

He added that the party expected Tinubu, Mbah and other APC candidates to return to office in 2027, citing what he described as their performance over the past three years.

The declarations followed the announcement of the election results by the Executive Chairman of ENSIEC, Prof. Christian Ngwu, at the commission’s headquarters in Enugu on Sunday.

Ngwu declared the election free and fair, saying it was conducted in accordance with the rules guiding the commission.

He said the commission would proceed with the issuance of certificates of return to the successful candidates.

The results showed wide margins for several APC candidates across the 17 local government areas.

In Igbo-Eze South, Chief Ugochukwu Ukwueze was declared chairman-elect after securing all 51,033 votes recorded in the election.

Similarly, Dr Chris Onyebuchi won the Igbo-Eze North chairmanship election with all 137,751 votes cast.

In Aninri Local Government Area, Ugochukwu Nwanjoku polled 17,016 votes to defeat his closest opponent, Chief Emeka Amasie of the BOOT party, who secured 2,006 votes.

In Enugu South, the incumbent chairman and chairman-elect, Chief Caleb Ani, secured 71,335 votes to defeat the NDC candidate, Mr A.A. Ugwu, who polled 1,311 votes.

The outcome gives the APC control of all the elected local government chairmanship and councillors positions in the state, following ENSIEC’s declaration.
