Wike questions Peter Obi’s leadership capacity, Says Nigeria needs resilient leaders
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticized former presidential candidate Peter Obi, describing him as a politician who seeks easy routes to leadership rather than confronting the realities and challenges of governance.
Speaking during his monthly media briefing in Abuja on Monday, Wike argued that effective leadership requires courage, resilience, and the capacity to withstand pressure, insisting that Nigeria’s complex challenges demand leaders who are prepared to make difficult decisions and endure criticism.
The minister likened Obi to what he termed a “food is ready” politician, suggesting that the former Anambra State governor prefers situations where success comes without the struggles and sacrifices often associated with political leadership.
“Peter Obi is like food is ready, ‘mama put’. I don’t want struggling in this country. There are challenges. You must have the capacity to face those challenges,” Wike said.
According to him, leadership is not defined by criticism of opponents or popular rhetoric, but by the ability to remain steadfast in the face of adversity and responsibility.
Drawing examples from his political journey within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wike recalled resisting pressure to abandon the party during periods of internal turmoil despite the influence and resources of rival political actors.

“You saw in PDP, all the governors, I said I will not leave this party. They had money, yes, but it’s not money. I said I was not going to leave, rather you will leave. Have I left? Have you not left?” he stated.
The former Rivers State governor maintained that enduring difficult circumstances is one of the defining attributes of leadership, stressing that true leaders do not retreat when confronted with opposition.
Wike also reflected on the criticism he faced following his appointment as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He said he was subjected to intense public scrutiny and attacks but remained focused on delivering on his mandate.
“That’s what makes you a leader. That’s what makes you a man. Leadership is not bashing you. That’s not leadership. You remember when I came here as a minister, there was nothing I did not, no abuse I did not get,” he added.
The remarks are the latest in a series of political exchanges involving Wike and Obi, two influential figures whose differing approaches to governance and national politics have continued to generate debate within Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of future electoral contests.
