Nigerian football has been thrown into mourning following the death of Wikki Tourists FC defender Kabiru Mohammed, who died in a fatal road accident on the Bauchi–Jos highway on Friday evening.

The club confirmed that Mohammed lost his life after the vehicle he was travelling in was involved in a severe collision during a brief break in the Nigeria National League (NNL) season. Emergency responders reportedly arrived at the scene, but the defender was pronounced dead on arrival due to the severity of his injuries.

Wikki Tourists FC described Mohammed as a committed and disciplined member of the squad, expressing deep sorrow over the sudden loss.

In a statement, the club said the defender was more than just a player, noting his leadership qualities and influence within the dressing room. The club extended condolences to his family, teammates, and supporters, calling the incident a devastating blow at a critical stage of their campaign.

Mohammed was an important figure in Wikki Tourists’ push for a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), known for his versatility in defence and strong tactical awareness.

The news has triggered widespread reactions across Nigerian football, with the Nigeria National League (NNL) and the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) issuing condolence messages to the club and the player’s family.

Several clubs, including Kano Pillars, Lobi Stars, and Plateau United, also expressed sympathy, highlighting Mohammed’s reputation as a respected figure within the domestic football community.

The NNL is expected to observe a league-wide moment of silence in his honour, while clubs across the country are preparing tributes ahead of upcoming fixtures.

Family members, in collaboration with the club and Bauchi State authorities, are making arrangements for Mohammed’s burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

His death leaves a significant gap in the Wikki Tourists squad both on and off the pitch, with the club now facing the emotional challenge of continuing their promotion campaign without one of their key defenders.
