Women leaders from across Nigeria’s business, political and professional landscape are expected to converge on Abuja on Friday, August 21, for the Women in Business and Politics Summit 2026, a gathering focused on female leadership, economic participation and national development.

The summit, themed “Celebrating Excellence, Leadership and Impact,” is expected to bring together government officials, entrepreneurs, policymakers, corporate executives and other influential stakeholders to examine the role of women in shaping Nigeria’s economic and political future.

Among government officials expected at the event are the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ola Olukoyede; and Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.

Organisers said the summit is designed to go beyond an awards ceremony by creating a platform for women leaders to exchange ideas, build strategic partnerships and develop opportunities that could contribute to national development.

The event is expected to recognise women who have made significant contributions across sectors including business, politics and governance, banking and finance, energy, healthcare, education, technology, law, media and social impact.

The programme features 12 award categories, with more than 50 women expected to receive recognition for outstanding achievements.

However, organisers said the summit’s focus would extend beyond recognition, with keynote presentations, executive roundtables, policy discussions, networking, business matchmaking and mentorship sessions scheduled as part of the programme.

A major objective is to connect established women leaders with younger professionals and entrepreneurs while creating opportunities for mentorship and collaboration.

The organisers are also expected to develop a policy communiqué containing recommendations for government and the private sector, as well as establish a year-round mentorship programme.

The initiative comes amid growing discussions about women’s representation in leadership and decision-making, particularly as Nigeria approaches the 2027 election cycle.

Although women remain significant contributors to Nigeria’s economy as entrepreneurs, professionals, executives, academics and public servants, their representation in political and strategic decision-making remains relatively limited.

The summit is therefore expected to place particular emphasis on emerging leaders under 40, while organisers are targeting at least 40 per cent first-time attendees.

Organisers said the objective is not only to celebrate women who have already achieved leadership positions but also to create pathways for a new generation to gain access, influence and opportunities.

The Abuja gathering is consequently positioned as both a celebration of accomplished women and a platform for discussions on how female leadership can be strengthened across Nigeria’s political, economic and social sectors.
