In commemoration of the 2026 World Environment Day, Zenith Bank Plc has reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability and responsible corporate citizenship through a two-phase environmental clean-up exercise across key locations in Lagos State.

The initiative, held under the global theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” featured extensive sanitation and environmental awareness activities aimed at promoting cleaner communities and supporting climate action efforts.

The first phase of the exercise took place on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, when staff members of the bank embarked on a clean-up operation along Ajose Adeogun Street in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The exercise saw employees actively clearing waste from the area while also engaging residents and business operators on the importance of proper waste disposal and environmental responsibility.

According to the bank, the exercise reflects its longstanding culture of community service and environmental stewardship, while encouraging collective action towards maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment.

The second phase was conducted on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at the Falomo Waterways in Ikoyi, Lagos, in collaboration with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA).

The waterways clean-up focused on removing marine debris and waste materials from the water channels, with the objective of promoting cleaner waterways, preserving aquatic ecosystems, and contributing to Lagos State’s climate-resilience and environmental sustainability agenda.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Plc, Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON, emphasized the bank’s commitment to integrating sustainability into its operations and corporate culture.

“At Zenith Bank, sustainability is integral to how we operate. Clearing our streets and our waterways is a practical reminder that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility – and one we are proud to take up alongside LAWMA and LASWA. Through these exercises, we are taking deliberate action to preserve our communities, support climate action, and inspire others to act. Our operations will continue to align with global environmental standards as we build a more sustainable future for Nigeria and Africa,” she said.

Zenith Bank noted that the environmental initiative forms part of its broader Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, which focuses on promoting sustainable business practices, supporting green investments, improving energy efficiency, and implementing community-focused development programmes.

The bank further stated that its sustainability efforts contribute to the achievement of key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
