The House of Representatives has appointed Bayelsa lawmaker, Frederick Agbedi, as the new Minority Leader following a major leadership reshuffle within the opposition caucus triggered by recent political defections and changes to House rules.

Agbedi, who represents Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency, emerged on Thursday after the resignation of former Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda of Rivers State, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The announcement was made during plenary after Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, read a letter from minority lawmakers informing the chamber of a consensus reached on filling vacant opposition leadership positions in the 10th National Assembly.

According to the letter, opposition lawmakers unanimously endorsed Agbedi as Minority Leader, alongside Hon. Mansur Soro of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) as Minority Whip and Hon. Abdussamad Dasuki of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as Deputy Minority Leader.

Reading the correspondence on the floor of the House, Abbas said the minority caucus had collectively agreed on the nominees to occupy the vacant principal offices allocated to opposition parties.

He congratulated the newly appointed leaders, stating that their emergence completed the structure of principal officers in the House.

“Today, the body of principal officers is complete, and I want to seize this opportunity on behalf of the entire House to congratulate the three members and wish them success in their new responsibilities,” Abbas said.

The Speaker also pledged the cooperation of the House leadership, stressing that the new officers would play a critical role in advancing the legislative objectives of the 10th Assembly.

“The leadership of the House will work with them assiduously in ensuring that we achieve our legislative agenda objectives of this very important 10th Assembly,” he added.

Agbedi, a veteran legislator and one of the longest-serving members of the Green Chamber, has represented his Bayelsa constituency since 2011. His elevation places him at the forefront of coordinating opposition lawmakers, articulating minority positions on legislative matters and providing alternative viewpoints on government policies.

Political analysts view his appointment as significant, particularly at a time when opposition parties are grappling with internal realignments, defections and preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The emergence of the new leadership team comes amid growing concerns over the shrinking ranks of opposition parties in the National Assembly following a wave of defections to the ruling APC.

Shortly after Agbedi’s appointment was announced, a lawmaker representing Ideato North/Ideato South Federal Constituency of Imo State, Ikenga Ugochinyere, formally withdrew from the race for Minority Leader.

Ugochinyere had earlier been nominated for the position but cited recent amendments to House Rules and newly introduced eligibility requirements for principal officers as the basis for stepping aside.

The revised rules, which have sparked debate among opposition lawmakers, are believed to have played a major role in determining the outcome of the leadership contest.

Observers say the immediate task before Agbedi and his team will be to unite lawmakers from different opposition parties and ensure a coordinated approach to legislative oversight in an APC-dominated parliament.

For the PDP, which remains the largest opposition party in the House despite recent defections, Agbedi’s emergence is seen as a strategic effort to preserve cohesion within the minority bloc and strengthen its influence on parliamentary debates and decision-making.

With the appointments of Agbedi, Soro and Dasuki, the opposition caucus hopes to put weeks of uncertainty behind it and reposition itself as an effective counterweight within the National Assembly as the country’s political landscape continues to evolve ahead of 2027.
