The ruling All Progressives Congress has appointed Sim Fubara alongside several serving and former governors as coordinators and collation officers for its forthcoming presidential primary election scheduled to hold across the country.

The party also confirmed that it has adopted the direct primary system for the exercise, a process that will allow all registered APC members nationwide to participate in electing the party’s presidential candidate.

According to a document issued by the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, the direct primary election will take place simultaneously across Nigeria’s 8,809 wards on May 24, 2026.

Under the arrangement, designated state coordinators and collation officers will oversee the conduct of the exercise in their assigned states, supervise the collation of results from all local government areas and transmit the final outcome to the Presidential Primary Election Committee in Abuja.

The document stated that governors and other senior party figures appointed for the assignment would be responsible for ensuring the smooth organisation and conduct of the primaries within their jurisdictions.

“The organisation and conduct of the direct primary in each of the 36 states and the FCT shall be the responsibility of the State Coordinator and Collation Officer, who shall also collate the results of all the local governments in the state and present the same to the Presidential Primary Election Committee in Abuja, FCT on 24 May, 2026,” the statement partly read.

The party further noted that the process would be guided by previously issued procedures governing the conduct of direct and consensus primaries, which had already been forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The document was signed by APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru.

The adoption of the direct primary model is expected to significantly expand participation within the party by allowing ordinary members at the ward level to vote directly for their preferred presidential aspirant, rather than relying solely on delegates.

Political observers say the move could intensify grassroots mobilisation within the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections while also testing the party’s organisational strength nationwide.

The development comes amid increasing political realignments and consultations within major political parties as preparations gather momentum for the next presidential contest.
