APC governors draw red line over Wike’s ‘Rainbow Coalition’ as 2027 battle intensifies

The 2027 political contest is entering a potentially disruptive phase as governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have drawn a clear line against political alliances they believe could undermine the party’s candidates or President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

The decision followed a closed-door meeting of the APC Governors’ Forum in Abuja, where the governors resolved that none of their members would participate in, support or endorse any political arrangement capable of creating divided loyalty within the ruling party.

The resolution is significant because it comes against the backdrop of growing political activities surrounding Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, whose emerging political coalition has attracted supporters across party lines ahead of the 2027 elections.

Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, announced the resolution after the meeting.

“The APC governors forum unanimously resolved that its members will not participate in, support, or endorse any alliance or political arrangement capable of undermining the reelection of Mr. President, weakening the APC, or adversely affecting any candidate of the party at all levels,” Uzodimma said.

The carefully worded resolution appears to go beyond a general commitment to Tinubu’s re-election.

By extending the position to “any candidate of the party at all levels”, the governors are signalling that support for the President in 2027 cannot, in their view, be separated from the electoral interests of APC candidates contesting Senate, House of Representatives, governorship and state assembly seats.

The development is likely to further complicate the political relationship between the APC governors and Wike.

Although Wike remains a prominent supporter of President Tinubu, he has been building a political structure that cuts across traditional party boundaries.

His proposed “Rainbow Coalition” has been presented as a platform for mobilising support for Tinubu in 2027, but its association with politicians and candidates operating outside the APC has generated unease among some members of the ruling party.

The underlying question is whether a politician can simultaneously campaign for Tinubu on the APC ticket while supporting candidates from other political parties in legislative and state elections.

For APC governors, the answer appears increasingly clear: such an arrangement could threaten the party’s electoral machinery.

Wike has, however, maintained that his political activities should not be interpreted as opposition to Tinubu or the APC-controlled presidency.

He has argued that supporting the President does not necessarily require him to abandon politicians and candidates he personally believes in.

The disagreement has already produced public exchanges between Wike and some APC governors, particularly Uzodimma and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

Presidential elections and legislative elections take place simultaneously, creating the possibility of voters supporting one party’s presidential candidate while choosing candidates from another party for other positions.

Political analysts say this could become particularly consequential in states where the APC’s presidential support base is stronger than its local political structures.

Professor of Political Science, Dr. Adewale Oladimeji, said the governors’ position should be viewed as an attempt to prevent “political free-riding” within the ruling party.

“Once politicians begin mobilising for the presidential candidate while simultaneously supporting opposition candidates at the legislative level, the party structure becomes difficult to control,” he said.

According to him, the APC governors are primarily protecting their own political interests.

“Governors understand that the presidential election is only one component of the 2027 contest. Their survival depends heavily on who controls the National Assembly and the state political structures after the election,” he added.

Another political analyst, Dr. Ibrahim Sule, said the dispute exposes a deeper struggle over who controls the machinery of the 2027 election.

“Wike has demonstrated an ability to operate beyond conventional party boundaries. The governors, on the other hand, are defending the traditional party structure. These are two different models of political mobilisation,” Sule said.

He argued that the governors’ resolution could force politicians who want to support Tinubu while backing candidates outside the APC to make difficult choices.

“If this position is enforced, politicians will increasingly be asked to choose between loyalty to the APC’s candidates and loyalty to individual political alliances,” he said.

Tinubu Caught Between Loyalty Networks
The situation also presents a delicate balancing act for President Tinubu.

Wike has remained one of the more prominent political figures outside the APC to openly support the President’s second-term ambition.

His political influence, particularly within the opposition space, could potentially help the Tinubu campaign attract votes beyond the APC’s traditional base.

But the governors control critical state-level political structures and remain indispensable to the APC’s ability to mobilise voters.

Political economist Chinedu Okafor said Tinubu would therefore need to manage both camps carefully.

“The President benefits from a broad coalition, but an excessively broad coalition can create friction with the party structure that delivers the votes,” he said.

Okafor added that the APC leadership would ultimately have to determine whether cross-party alliances strengthen Tinubu’s presidential bid or undermine the party’s wider electoral performance.

The APC governors’ declaration may therefore be more than a response to Wike’s activities. It could represent an early attempt by the ruling party to establish the boundaries of political loyalty ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 election.

The central issue is no longer simply whether politicians support Tinubu.

It is whether they can support Tinubu while simultaneously helping candidates who may defeat APC candidates on the same ballot.

That distinction could become one of the defining political fault lines of the 2027 election.

For now, the APC governors have made their position explicit: support for Tinubu must not come at the expense of the APC’s candidates or organisational strength.

The coming months will reveal whether Wike’s cross-party strategy can coexist with that demand—or whether the emerging confrontation will force Nigeria’s politicians to choose sides.
