Arsenal teammates Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard will put their club partnership on hold when England face Norway in a highly anticipated quarter-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Saturday.

The two midfielders, who have played pivotal roles for Arsenal under manager Mikel Arteta, will line up on opposite sides as their countries battle for a place in the semi-finals at Miami Stadium.

Rice and Ødegaard have formed one of Arsenal’s most influential midfield partnerships, featuring together more than 100 times for the Premier League champions. However, their friendship will take a back seat as England and Norway chase a place in the tournament’s final four.

Speaking ahead of the match, Norway captain Ødegaard praised Rice’s qualities, describing the England international as a player who gives everything for his team.

“He’s someone who always gives absolutely everything for the team. He is always fighting for every single ball, bringing his energy to the pitch and driving the team forward,” Ødegaard said.

Rice has also previously praised Ødegaard’s leadership and influence at Arsenal, describing the Norwegian playmaker as a player who consistently performs in the biggest matches.

The midfield contest is expected to play a decisive role in Saturday’s encounter.

Rice has been a key figure for England throughout the tournament, completing 91 per cent of his passes while providing defensive stability as the Three Lions advanced to the quarter-finals.

Ødegaard, meanwhile, has been instrumental in Norway’s impressive campaign. The Arsenal captain has registered three assists and recorded 229 sprints during the tournament, underlining his work rate and creativity as Norway reached the last eight.

England progressed after defeating co-hosts Mexico 3-2 in the Round of 16, while Norway secured one of the tournament’s biggest upsets by eliminating Brazil with a 2-1 victory.

With England aiming to end its long wait for another World Cup title and Norway seeking a place in the semi-finals for the first time in decades, Saturday’s clash carries significant stakes for both nations.

For Rice and Ødegaard, however, the match also represents a temporary pause in one of club football’s strongest midfield partnerships, with only one Arsenal star guaranteed a place in the World Cup semi-finals.
