Chelsea complete £43m signing of Marco Palestra on seven-year deal
Chelsea have confirmed the signing of highly rated Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta, securing the 21-year-old on a seven-year contract in what marks the club’s first major acquisition under new manager Xabi Alonso.
The Premier League club reportedly paid more than £43 million to land the versatile defender after beating off competition from Inter Milan, who had been widely regarded as the frontrunners for his signature for much of the summer transfer window.
Chelsea had closely monitored Palestra’s performances during his loan spell at Cagliari last season, where he impressed with his defensive versatility and consistency.
Although Inter had been in advanced discussions with Atalanta over a potential transfer, Chelsea entered the race with an improved financial offer that convinced the Serie A club to sanction the move.
Following the agreement between both clubs, negotiations over personal terms were concluded swiftly, paving the way for the Italian international to complete his move to Stamford Bridge.

Palestra becomes Chelsea’s first official signing of the Xabi Alonso era, excluding players whose transfers had already been agreed before the Spaniard’s appointment.
Speaking after completing the move, the defender expressed his excitement at joining the West London club.
“Many factors influenced my decision to join Chelsea, one of the biggest clubs in world football,” Palestra told the club’s official media channels.
“I am delighted to begin this new chapter. I have felt the excitement since Chelsea first showed interest in me. I can’t wait to meet the fans, my teammates and the manager.
“We have many talented players, a strong squad and an excellent manager in Xabi Alonso. He has explained his vision for how he wants the team to play, and it is something I am excited to be part of. We are ready to compete in the Premier League.”
The young defender also paid tribute to Atalanta, where he developed through the club’s academy before establishing himself as one of Italy’s brightest defensive prospects.
In a farewell message posted on Instagram, Palestra reflected on his journey with the Serie A side.
“I arrived in Bergamo as a child. Atalanta was more than just a club; it was where I grew as both a footballer and a person,” he wrote.
Chelsea will hope Palestra’s arrival strengthens their defensive options as Alonso begins rebuilding the squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
