Coordinated insurgent attacks rock Mali, military bases, prison targeted

Armed insurgents launched coordinated attacks on several military installations and a high-security prison across Mali on Saturday, intensifying security concerns in the conflict-ridden West African nation.

According to military authorities and local residents, the attacks began around 4:00 a.m. local time, with heavily armed assailants striking key locations in the northern cities of Gao and Anefis, the central town of Sévaré, and the Kéniéroba high-security prison on the outskirts of the capital, Bamako.

Witnesses reported sustained gunfire and explosions near military bases as Malian security forces engaged the attackers in fierce confrontations. Authorities said operations were still ongoing to secure the affected areas and assess the full extent of the damage.

The assault on Kéniéroba prison has raised particular concern among security officials. The facility houses high-profile inmates, including suspected militants, prompting fears that the attack may have been aimed at facilitating a prison break or weakening state control. Officials have yet to confirm whether any inmates escaped or provide casualty figures.

Security analysts believe the coordinated offensive reflects growing cooperation between the jihadist group Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) and the Tuareg separatist movement, the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). The two groups, once divided by ideological and territorial differences, are increasingly believed to be working together against the Malian military and its foreign allies, including Russia’s Africa Corps.

The attacks come just months after the two armed groups reportedly carried out a joint offensive that resulted in the capture of strategic northern positions and a deadly bombing in Bamako, signaling an escalation in their operational capabilities.

Saturday’s assaults further expose the mounting security challenges facing Mali’s military-led government, which has struggled to contain a worsening insurgency despite intensified military operations.

Human rights organizations have also warned that the deteriorating security situation is worsening humanitarian conditions, with civilians increasingly caught between insurgent violence and military counteroffensives.

The Malian Armed Forces said troops remain deployed across the affected regions to restore order and pursue those responsible for the attacks, while investigations continue into the coordinated assault.
