Counter-protest erupts as white South Africans confront anti-immigrant demonstrators
Tensions reportedly escalated in parts of South Africa after anti-immigrant protesters were met by counter-protesters, including members of the white community, during demonstrations over immigration and crime.
Videos circulating on social media showed groups of demonstrators confronting one another, with counter-protesters challenging the anti-immigration campaign and calling for unity rather than hostility toward foreign nationals.
The exchanges reportedly drew the attention of security personnel, who monitored the situation to prevent violence and maintain public order.
The demonstrations formed part of ongoing public debates in South Africa over illegal immigration, unemployment, crime and access to public services—issues that have fueled periodic anti-immigrant protests in several communities.

Witnesses said the counter-protest highlighted divisions within South African society over how the country should address immigration and security concerns. While some protesters argued for tougher action against undocumented migrants, others maintained that immigrants should not be blamed for the country’s broader socio-economic challenges.
Authorities have not officially confirmed the identities or affiliations of all groups involved, and there has been no comprehensive official account of the incident at the time of filing this report.
South Africa has witnessed several outbreaks of xenophobic violence over the years, resulting in attacks on foreign nationals, destruction of businesses and displacement of affected communities. Government officials have repeatedly condemned such attacks, stressing that criminality should be addressed through law enforcement rather than targeting people based on their nationality.
Security agencies have urged residents to remain peaceful and allow lawful authorities to handle issues relating to immigration enforcement, while community leaders continue to call for dialogue and restraint to prevent further tensions.
