Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has warned that any attempt to overthrow the country’s democratic government through a military coup would be unsuccessful, insisting that both the Armed Forces and Nigerian citizens would strongly resist such a move.

Speaking during a television interview on Friday, the retired Lieutenant General reaffirmed the military’s loyalty to constitutional governance, stressing that democracy remains far better than military rule.

Musa disclosed that he personally participated in efforts that helped foil a recent alleged coup plot, revealing that he and other senior military officers identified suspicious activities and reported the matter before formal investigations commenced.

According to the Defence Minister, he also chaired the committee responsible for investigating the alleged coup attempt.

“What we are trying to do now is to show the junior ones that a coup doesn’t pay anything. Democracy is far, far better than any military regime,” he stated.

The minister described those allegedly behind the failed plot as “confused individuals” who allegedly manipulated and deceived some junior officers into participating in the scheme.

He explained that investigations into the matter had been comprehensive and thorough, adding that prosecutions are already ongoing while the military court-martial process continues in line with established legal and military procedures.

Musa assured Nigerians that all accused persons are being granted fair hearing and the opportunity to defend themselves throughout the legal process.

“We are ensuring that due process is followed completely. Everybody involved has the right to defend themselves before the court-martial,” he said.

The Defence Minister further emphasized that the Nigerian military remains committed to defending democratic institutions and protecting the country’s constitutional order despite security challenges facing the nation.

Speaking on troop welfare, Musa highlighted ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to improve the living and working conditions of military personnel across the country.

He noted that salaries have remained stable while authorities are intensifying efforts to improve operational allowances, welfare packages and the supply of modern equipment for troops engaged in anti-insurgency and internal security operations.

According to him, improved government support has strengthened morale within the Armed Forces and enhanced operational effectiveness in the fight against terrorism, banditry and other security threats.

Musa also dismissed the possibility of any successful military takeover in Nigeria, arguing that Nigerians themselves would reject any unconstitutional attempt to seize power.

“Anybody who is thinking of planning a coup, I think he’s just wasting their time. Even the civilians in Nigeria will have taken them down,” he added.

He described the alleged coup attempt as unfortunate, particularly at a time when the country is witnessing gradual progress in governance, economic reforms and military support from the government.

Nigeria has remained under democratic rule since 1999 following decades of military interventions in politics. In recent years, however, concerns over military takeovers have resurfaced across parts of West Africa following coups in several countries within the region.
