The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has deployed a newly established Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) across Abuja as part of a fresh operational strategy aimed at tackling kidnapping, armed robbery, and other violent crimes in the capital and surrounding communities.

Police authorities said the unit was created following a directive linked to the restructuring of state-level anti-crime formations nationwide under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu. The reform led to the dissolution and reorganisation of existing Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams into the new specialised response structure.

According to the FCT Police Command, the VCRU represents more than a rebranding exercise, describing it as a major operational overhaul designed to strengthen intelligence-led policing and rapid response capabilities.

Officers deployed to the unit have reportedly undergone advanced training covering tactical response operations, intelligence gathering, rules of engagement, and human rights compliance.

The police also outlined new accountability mechanisms intended to improve public trust, including strict reliance on verified intelligence before deployment, internal command oversight, and structured monitoring involving civil society stakeholders and legal practitioners.

Under the new framework, the Commissioner of Police in the FCT will bear direct responsibility for the conduct and performance of the unit.

Authorities also said the system is designed to prevent arbitrary operations by ensuring that all deployments are based on verified intelligence, while civilian oversight panels will review operational conduct to promote transparency.

The tactical importance of the unit was demonstrated during an early operation on Thursday, June 5, 2026, when police foiled a kidnapping attempt in the Byazhin axis near Paze Hills in Abuja.

According to police reports, armed attackers attempted to storm a residential building in an area close to the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). Officers responded swiftly to distress calls and engaged the suspects in a prolonged gunfight lasting about 30 minutes.

The attackers reportedly fled into nearby vegetation with suspected injuries, abandoning an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and seven rounds of ammunition. The intended victims were rescued unharmed.

The FCT Police Command urged residents to support the new unit by providing timely intelligence through designated hotlines, stressing that effective security requires collaboration between law enforcement and the public.

Authorities said further operations will continue across identified high-risk areas in Abuja as part of ongoing efforts to curb violent crime in the capital.
