Authorities in the United States have arrested a 31-year-old man identified in media reports as Cole Tomas Allen following a security breach and shooting scare outside the annual White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner in Washington, DC.
The incident occurred Saturday evening at the Washington Hilton, where President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, cabinet officials, lawmakers and hundreds of journalists were attending the high-profile gala hosted by the White House Correspondents’ Association.
Gunfire erupted after the suspect allegedly forced his way through a security checkpoint just outside the hotel ballroom. Secret Service agents opened fire and subdued him before he could reach the event space. President Trump later described the suspect as a “would-be assassin” and said he appeared to have acted alone.
Arrest at the Scene
Law enforcement officials said the suspect was taken into custody at the scene. While authorities have not formally released his name, multiple US media outlets identified him as Cole Tomas Allen, a resident of Torrance, California, a city in the South Bay region near Los Angeles.
Investigators believe Allen was staying at the Washington Hilton as a registered guest, which may have enabled him to access secured areas of the hotel. Officials said they are still working to determine a motive.
The interim chief of Washington’s Metropolitan Police Department, Jeffery Carroll, confirmed that investigators are examining how the suspect entered the building and whether he had prior knowledge of the security arrangements.
Background and Online Footprint
Publicly available records and social media profiles linked to Allen suggest he worked in education and technology. Posts appearing to be associated with him show he was recognised as “Teacher of the Month” in December 2024 by the Torrance branch of C2 Education, a private tutoring and test-preparation company.
A LinkedIn profile under his name describes him as a mechanical engineer and computer scientist by degree, as well as an independent game developer and teacher.
Federal campaign finance records show a $25 contribution in 2024 to a Democratic political action committee supporting then-presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
The Washington Hilton had been closed to the public from 2 p.m. Saturday in preparation for the dinner, which began at 8 p.m. Attendance was restricted to hotel guests and individuals with verified tickets or invitations. More than 2,000 guests passed through multiple security layers, including magnetometers operated by the Secret Service and the Transportation Security Administration.
Security camera footage later shared on social media showed the suspect running past officers near metal detectors that were being dismantled after the president had already entered the secured ballroom. Once the president was seated, no additional attendees were permitted into the main event area.
Following the exchange of gunfire, guests inside the ballroom were instructed to take cover as agents flooded the room. President Trump, the first lady and Vice President JD Vance were evacuated to a secure location before the president later returned to the White House to address reporters.
Trump told journalists that preliminary information suggested the suspect acted alone and said he did not believe the attack was connected to ongoing US foreign policy conflicts, including tensions involving Iran.
The suspect is currently in custody and receiving medical treatment. Authorities have not announced formal charges, and the investigation remains ongoing.
