Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior has clarified why midfielder Enzo Fernandez was not formally appointed club captain during the absence of Reece James, despite wearing the armband in Saturday’s Premier League clash against Manchester United.
Chelsea suffered a narrow 1–0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, with Fernandez captaining the side in James’ absence. The England international has been sidelined since March 2026 after sustaining a hamstring injury and has endured a season disrupted by recurring fitness setbacks.
Fernandez, who recently returned from a two-match suspension following a controversial interview, stepped in to wear the armband for the encounter.
However, Rosenior stressed that the club operates with a structured leadership group rather than automatically assigning the captaincy to a single replacement.
“The decision is that we have a leadership group. I believe that wearing the armband is a privilege for this club,” Rosenior said after the match.
He nonetheless praised the Argentine midfielder’s performance, describing him as one of Chelsea’s standout players on the night.
“Enzo performed like a captain today. I thought he was outstanding; he exerted himself fully, gave his all, played offensively, and was unfortunate not to score on a few occasions,” Rosenior added. “That reflects his commitment to the team throughout this period. I am extremely pleased with his performance and with him, even though we did not achieve the result we felt we deserved or needed tonight.”

The defeat was further compounded by injury concerns, as Brazilian youngster Willian Estevao was substituted in the first half after appearing to suffer another hamstring problem.
The 18-year-old required immediate medical attention before being replaced by Alejandro Garnacho. Estevao has already missed six matches this season due to a similar issue, raising concerns that he could face another extended spell on the sidelines.
“He was heartbroken; he was crying at halftime,” Rosenior revealed. “I feel really sorry for him; it appears to be a hamstring issue. It happened at a moment when he was breaking through on goal and pulled his hamstring then.”
Chelsea will now await medical assessments to determine the severity of the injury as they look to regroup following the setback against Manchester United.
