A place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final will be at stake on Tuesday when France and Spain meet in a blockbuster semi-final featuring two of international football’s most formidable sides.

France, runners-up at the 2022 World Cup after lifting the trophy in 2018, are chasing a third world title, while European champions Spain are aiming to win the tournament for only the second time, having previously triumphed in South Africa in 2010.

The semi-final pits France’s explosive attack, spearheaded by Kylian Mbappe, against a disciplined Spain side that has impressed with its possession-based football and defensive solidity.

Mbappe has been one of the tournament’s standout performers, scoring eight goals to share the lead in the Golden Boot race with Argentina captain Lionel Messi. The Real Madrid forward will headline a French attack that also includes Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele and winger Michael Olise, whose pace and creativity have been key to Les Bleus’ campaign.

France also boast attacking depth through Paris Saint-Germain duo Bradley Barcola and Désiré Doué, giving coach Didier Deschamps several options in the final third.

Deschamps, who will step down after the World Cup following 14 years in charge, is seeking to end his tenure by adding a third World Cup title to his achievements as both a player and coach.

Despite France’s pedigree, the veteran manager believes Spain enter the contest as favourites.

“Forget about the first game against Cape Verde,” Deschamps said, referring to Spain’s goalless opening draw.

“Ever since then Spain have confirmed that they are the favourites.”

Spain have steadily grown into the tournament after that early stumble, with teenage sensation Lamine Yamal finding top form following his recovery from a hamstring injury.

The Barcelona winger produced a match-winning display in Spain’s 2-1 quarter-final victory over Belgium and will again be central to La Roja’s hopes.

Spain have also enjoyed recent success against France, winning 2-1 in the semi-finals of Euro 2024 before edging a thrilling 5-4 victory in the UEFA Nations League semi-final in 2025.

Asked about those results, Yamal dismissed suggestions that Spain should fear their opponents.

“I was asked if I was afraid of France, and I said no. We are European champions. It’s simply football,” he said.

The 19-year-old revealed he celebrated his birthday by buying a jewel-encrusted necklace but admitted reaching the World Cup final would be the perfect present.

“I haven’t received many gifts yet. The best gift would be a win on Tuesday and a trip to New York,” he said.

Spain’s run to the semi-finals has been built on defensive discipline, with Belgium becoming the first team to score against them in the tournament during the quarter-finals.

Under coach Luis de la Fuente, Spain have rediscovered the possession-based style that brought them success over the past decade, setting the stage for a fascinating tactical battle against France’s pace and attacking firepower.

With a place in Sunday’s final on the line, the showdown promises to be one of the highlights of the tournament.
