Fresh concerns have emerged over the fitness of Argentine superstar Lionel Messi after he was substituted early during Inter Miami CF’s dramatic 6-4 victory over Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer, just weeks before the FIFA World Cup.

Messi, who played a key role in the entertaining encounter by providing assists for Inter Miami’s first and third goals, was taken off in the 73rd minute after appearing to signal to the bench that he wanted to be substituted.

The development immediately sparked fears among Argentine supporters and the national team coaching crew, especially after the 38-year-old walked straight down the tunnel instead of taking his place on the bench.

The match itself was played under difficult weather conditions, with heavy rainfall affecting the pitch midway through the second half. Several players reportedly struggled to maintain balance on the slippery surface.

Messi was among those affected, slipping in the 62nd minute before later indicating he wanted to come off. His sudden exit raised speculation about a possible injury setback ahead of Argentina’s World Cup title defence campaign.

However, Inter Miami interim manager Guillermo Hoyos later moved to calm fears, insisting the substitution was only precautionary and not related to any serious injury.

Speaking after the match, Hoyos explained that the Argentine captain was simply exhausted after battling difficult playing conditions.

“As far as I know, we don’t have a report on that yet, but he really was fatigued,” Hoyos said.

“It was fatigue. He was tired, the field was heavy, and rather than doubt, one always says not to take the risk.”

The manager’s explanation will come as a major relief to Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni, who is preparing to announce his squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup on June 1.

Despite concerns surrounding his early departure, Messi did not appear to require medical assistance while leaving the pitch, further supporting claims that the substitution was merely a preventive measure.

The Argentine icon has repeatedly stated his desire to feature at the World Cup, which could become his sixth appearance at football’s biggest tournament — matching the record expected to also be achieved by his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

Nevertheless, Messi has also emphasized that he would only participate if he felt physically capable of competing at the highest level.

Reports indicate that both Messi and fellow Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul have recently undergone extra fitness sessions in a bid to ensure peak conditioning ahead of the tournament.

Messi heads into the competition in outstanding form for Inter Miami, having recorded 12 goals and eight assists in just 14 MLS appearances this season.

His impressive performances have further strengthened hopes among Argentine fans that he can inspire the reigning world champions to another successful campaign.

The veteran forward already boasts an extraordinary World Cup record, with 13 goals scored across previous tournaments, including seven during the unforgettable 2022 edition where Argentina defeated France national football team on penalties following a thrilling 3-3 final.

Argentina is scheduled to begin their World Cup campaign on June 17 against Algeria in Kansas City. They will then face Austria on June 22 in Texas before concluding their group-stage fixtures against Jordan on June 28, also in Texas.
