Peter Obi unveils vision, promises roadmap for national transformation

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has unveiled key priorities of his proposed administration, promising far-reaching reforms in education, healthcare and skills development as part of a broader strategy to reposition Nigeria for sustainable economic growth and national development.

In a statement, Obi said his decision to seek the presidency was motivated by a commitment to place Nigeria on the path of unity, productivity and prosperity.

He disclosed that he would, in the coming weeks and months, present a comprehensive governance roadmap aimed at tackling abuse in government, improving citizens’ quality of life and promoting national unity, peace and inclusive development.

According to the former Anambra State governor, the proposed roadmap is founded on the principles of unity, inclusion, social justice, equity and the freedom of every Nigerian to pursue legitimate aspirations.

Obi identified education and healthcare as the foundation of his development agenda, describing investment in human capital as the most important infrastructure required to transform the country.

He argued that comprehensive reforms in both sectors would enable Nigeria to maximise the potential of its youthful population and accelerate economic and social development.

As part of his education agenda, Obi pledged that an NDC-led administration would establish a national task force to significantly reduce the number of out-of-school children across the country.

He also promised to prioritise Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), saying it would produce the skilled workforce needed to support industrialisation through agriculture, value addition and the establishment of industrial parks in development zones across Nigeria’s geopolitical regions.

Obi said his administration would increase funding for TVET institutions while improving facilities through partnerships involving the government, private sector, social entrepreneurs and faith-based educational institutions.

He added that apprenticeship programmes would be expanded in collaboration with the private sector, drawing inspiration from Germany’s dual education model to equip young Nigerians with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.

The NDC presidential candidate expressed concern over what he described as the paradox of rising unemployment alongside a shortage of skilled labour, noting that the situation has forced many Nigerian entrepreneurs to relocate businesses abroad.

According to him, closing the country’s skills gap would help shift Nigeria from a consumption-driven economy to a production-based economy capable of generating jobs and sustainable growth.

Obi further pledged to strengthen character and civic education, maintaining that ethical leadership, trust and shared national values would form the cornerstone of his proposed governance model.
