Rainbow coalition dispute deepens as Wike slams APC governors

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticised governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing them as “politically lazy” over their opposition to his Rainbow Coalition ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Wike made the statement during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday, arguing that his decision to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid did not amount to abandoning his political party or preventing other political parties from fielding candidates.

The minister’s comments have brought renewed attention to the political tensions surrounding the coalition, the APC’s internal concerns about competing political alliances and the broader question of how political actors will position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

Coalition dispute: Two competing interpretations

The disagreement centers on whether support for the President’s re-election should be separated from support for APC candidates contesting other positions.

APC Governors’ Forum

The forum, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, said on September 14 that its members would not support an alliance capable of weakening the APC, undermining Tinubu’s re-election or harming the party’s candidates at any level.

Wike argues that backing Tinubu does not require the PDP to abandon its own candidates in legislative or other elections. He also says he never approached the APC Governors’ Forum to negotiate an alliance, challenging the basis of the governors’ opposition.

The distinction is significant because a coalition can support a presidential candidate while political parties retain their own structures and candidates for other contests. Whether that arrangement creates electoral conflicts depends on the coalition’s actual agreements, candidate-selection decisions and campaign activities.

Wike questions governors’ motives

Wike maintained that the disagreement over his political activities was not a recent development. He recalled that some governors had opposed his appointment as FCT minister and had also been unhappy with his tenure as Rivers State governor.

“This thing did not start today. It started at a ministerial position. They were not happy that I was Minister of FCT. Also, they were unhappy when I was governor.”

He further suggested that his critics lacked access to the information available to him and would have a different understanding of his actions if they possessed the same knowledge of the political situation.

The minister’s remarks indicate that he views the current disagreement as part of a longer-running political contest rather than simply a dispute over the Rainbow Coalition. However, his assertion about the governors’ motives remains his own interpretation; the governors’ publicly stated objection is focused on protecting the APC and its candidates.

Political reactions: PDP backs Wike

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has defended Wike’s right to support Tinubu while retaining his membership of the opposition party.

In a statement on Tuesday, PDP National Publicity Secretary Jungudo Mohammed said Wike had a constitutional and democratic right to support the presidential candidate of his choice. He argued that supporting Tinubu did not require Wike to abandon his political identity or the PDP’s participation in other elections.

Mohammed also criticised the APC governors’ opposition, alleging that some of them were concerned about their electoral prospects and records in office. He challenged the governors to focus on governance, accountability and the delivery of services to their constituents rather than attempting to determine whom Wike should support.

The PDP’s response, however, represents the position of a party involved in the political dispute. Its allegations about the governors’ performance and motivations remain claims by the party, not independently established findings.

What the dispute means for 2027

The controversy exposes a potential conflict between two political objectives: securing support for President Tinubu’s re-election and protecting the electoral interests of APC candidates contesting other positions.

The governors’ September 14 resolution makes clear that their stated priority is a coordinated APC campaign. Uzodimma said the forum would not support candidates outside the APC structure where doing so could affect the party’s electoral interests.

Wike’s position is different. He maintains that support for Tinubu can coexist with the PDP’s decision to field candidates, leaving voters to choose among competing candidates in the various elections.

The practical consequences will depend on how the coalition operates, whether it fields or supports candidates against APC nominees, and how its activities interact with the official campaign structures of the ruling party.
