The 2026 summer transfer window officially opened on Monday, ushering in a busy period of player movements across Europe, with several Nigerian footballers already completing transfers while others remain at the centre of speculation over their future.

The window, which runs until Tuesday, September 1, 2026, allows clubs across Europe to strengthen their squads ahead of the 2026/2027 season. Despite the ongoing FIFA World Cup, transfer activity is expected to remain intense as clubs look to reshape their teams.

Across Europe, Italy’s Serie A transfer market opens on June 29, while Spain’s La Liga, France’s Ligue 1 and Germany’s Bundesliga will all officially open on July 1. All major leagues will close their summer business on September 1.

As negotiations intensify across the continent, several Nigerian players are either sealing moves or attracting strong interest from top clubs.

Yohanna Completes Premier League Switch to Brighton

Nigerian youngster Zadok Yohanna has completed a permanent move to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion.

The winger joined Brighton from Swedish club AIK on a five-year contract, with the Seagulls beating competition from Premier League rivals Newcastle United and Chelsea FC.

The deal is seen as a major step in the youngster’s development as Brighton continue their strategy of signing and developing emerging talents.

Osimhen Attracts Interest From Europe’s Elite Clubs

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen remains one of the most sought-after players heading into the transfer window.

The 27-year-old, who joined Galatasaray from SSC Napoli and helped the Turkish side win the Super Lig title, still has three years left on his contract.

However, he continues to be linked with a host of top European clubs, including Manchester United, Chelsea FC, Paris Saint-Germain, Atlético Madrid, Juventus FC and Real Madrid CF.

Whether Galatasaray will sanction a sale remains uncertain, given the level of interest in the striker.

Chukwueze Future Unclear After Mixed Loan Spell

The future of Samuel Chukwueze is also unresolved as the transfer window opens.

The winger spent last season on loan at Fulham FC from AC Milan, with his loan contract set to expire on June 30, 2026.

Chukwueze’s parent club remains AC Milan, where he is under contract until 2028, but Fulham are yet to decide whether to make his stay permanent following a modest return of three goals and four assists across all competitions.

Iheanacho Decision Pending at Celtic

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho faces an uncertain summer despite a successful season with Celtic FC.

Iheanacho joined Celtic from Sevilla FC on a free transfer last summer and played a role in their league title-winning campaign.

His contract expires on June 30, although Celtic hold an option for an additional year. Former striker Alan McInally has urged the club to retain him following his strong performances.

Aribo Seeks New Club After Southampton Exit

Midfielder Joe Aribo is now a free agent after leaving Southampton FC at the end of his contract.

The 29-year-old is considering his next move, with former club Rangers FC reportedly monitoring his situation for a possible return.

Aribo is expected to finalise a new club before the end of the transfer window.

Nwabali Draws Interest From Africa and Beyond

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is also expected to resolve his future this summer after leaving Chippa United earlier this year.

The shot-stopper has attracted interest from clubs including Azam FC, Kaizer Chiefs and Simba SC, with reports also linking him to clubs in Europe and Saudi Arabia.

Transfer Expert Predicts Busy Summer for Nigerian Players

Sports journalist Femi Fabunmi believes several Nigerian players will complete major moves before the window closes.

He suggested that Nwabali is close to joining Simba SC, while Osimhen could still attract a late bid from elite European clubs.

Fabunmi also noted that Rangers remain keen on Aribo, while Yohanna’s move to Brighton could open the door for more Nigerian youngsters to secure opportunities in Europe.

With months remaining before the window shuts, Nigerian footballers are expected to remain at the centre of intense transfer speculation across Europe and beyond.
