Parts of Lagos State have been thrown into darkness after severe flooding caused by persistent rainfall disrupted operations at key electricity transmission facilities, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the company’s General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, TCN announced the declaration of force majeure on the Oworonshoki 132/33kV and Lekki 330/132kV Transmission Substations due to flooding caused by continuous downpours across the state.

According to the company, the Oworonshoki 132/33kV Transmission Substation has been completely shut down after floodwaters affected two of its power transformers, resulting in widespread power outages in areas served by the facility.

TCN explained that while the Lekki 330/132kV Transmission Substation remains operational, thanks to ongoing efforts to pump out floodwater, the situation at the Oworonshoki substation is more critical.

It disclosed that two transformers—TR1 (60MVA) and TR3 (30MVA)—tripped on no-load even after attempts were made to restore them.

The company further revealed that all protection and control cables connected to the affected transformers are currently submerged, making restoration efforts difficult as heavy rainfall continues.

“Although Lekki 330/132kV Transmission Substation is in service as water is continuously being pumped out of the station, Oworonshoki 132/33kV Transmission Substation is currently not in service because the flood has affected two power transformers,” the statement said.

TCN noted that engineers are working round the clock to evacuate the floodwater and assess the condition of the affected equipment before power can be safely restored.

“Our engineers are doing everything possible to evacuate the flood to enable them to test the transformers for restoration,” the company stated.

The transmission company apologised to customers of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) affected by the outage and expressed optimism that electricity supply would be restored once the floodwater recedes and the damaged equipment is certified safe for operation.
