A 14-year-old student opened fire at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday morning, resulting in the deaths of two students and two teachers.

The shooting, which occurred just after the start of the school year, left nine others injured, including a math teacher who sustained severe injuries.

The suspect, identified as Colt Gray, was quickly apprehended by a school resource officer minutes after the attack began around 10:20 a.m.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that Gray will be charged with murder as an adult.

Students and teachers recounted the horrifying moments as Gray rampaged through the school. One student, Sergio Caldera, described how the gunman pounded on his classroom door, demanding entry, before moving on.

Other students texted their parents, expressing their fear and love as they hid from the gunfire.

Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith condemned the violence, stating, “Hate will not prevail in this country. Love will prevail over what happened today.”

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but investigators are working to uncover any connections between Gray and his victims.

As the community mourns, Governor Brian Kemp and other officials have offered their support and prayers, vowing to assist in the investigation.

The incident comes just over a month after students returned to classes, leaving the community in shock and grief as they seek answers and healing.
