AfriSAFE 2024 Zambia report: Advancing food safety & community health

This comprehensive document sheds light on the significant strides made in advancing food safety, enhancing nutrition, and empowering communities throughout Southern Africa.

The report, a collaborative effort with Zambia Sugar and other key regional stakeholders, highlights a multifaceted campaign that achieved remarkable reach, touching the lives of over 50 million people across the continent.

Crucially, the initiative directly impacted more than 20,000 individuals through a combination of targeted training sessions, extensive outreach programs, and innovative interventions.

A Holistic Approach to Food Safety and Sustainable Empowerment

AfriSAFE’s 2024 campaign extended beyond conventional agricultural objectives, addressing a critical and often overlooked gap in food systems: ensuring safety, promoting health, and fostering sustainable empowerment.

Through a series of hands-on training sessions, vital school-based nutrition programs, and strategic grassroots mobilization, the initiative has fundamentally transformed communities from the ground up.

Among the most notable achievements was the comprehensive support provided to smallholder sugarcane farmers, a significant portion of whom are women. These farmers were equipped with modern, sustainable practices in critical areas such as post-harvest handling, safe pesticide application, and effective participation within the agricultural value chain.

The direct outcomes of this support include higher crop yields, improved household incomes, and, most importantly, safer and more nutritious food for families.

“This program has changed the way I farm,” shared Martha Mwansa, a smallholder farmer from Mazabuka, Zambia. “I now use safer methods and understand how to protect my family’s health through better food handling.” Her testimony underscores the direct and positive impact on daily lives.

Gender Inclusion at the Core of the Initiative

A pivotal and deliberate focus of the AfriSAFE initiative was the integration of gender equity.

Female farmers constituted a large proportion of the participants, benefiting from targeted efforts specifically designed to boost their capacity and confidence in leading agribusinesses.

Buoyed by the significant momentum and positive outcomes of 2024, AfriSAFE has ambitious plans to scale its operations to other high-need regions across Africa.

Future efforts will strategically incorporate climate-smart agriculture, further expand its digital education platforms, and enhance supply chain integration to maximize impact.
