Prominent African Democratic Congress (ADC) figure, Mr. Peter Obi, has openly signaled his intention to seek the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections, making it clear that he is positioning himself for the top job rather than a secondary role within the party.

Obi disclosed his ambition while addressing supporters at a campaign event organised for ADC candidates contesting the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.

The rally took place at the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), where he urged party faithful and residents to mobilise support for the ADC candidate in the local poll.

In his remarks, Obi underscored the strategic importance of the AMAC election to his broader political aspirations, describing the contest as a critical step in strengthening the party’s structure and advancing his own presidential bid.

He emphasised that his participation in the party’s political activities is as a leading contender, not in a subordinate or supporting capacity.

According to Obi, victory in the AMAC election would significantly boost his political journey and reinforce the ADC’s visibility and credibility ahead of national elections.

He appealed to supporters to view the local council poll as part of a larger movement aimed at repositioning the party for success in 2027.

“This coming election, support us in AMAC; it will help me. Your support in AMAC is critical to our journey. I am involved and contesting the coming election as number one. When I come back, you will see. I assure you,” Obi told the crowd.

His comments have further energised his support base, particularly members of the Obidient Movement, who have continued to mount pressure on the ADC leadership to adopt Obi as the party’s sole presidential standard-bearer for the 2027 elections.

Many of his supporters argue that his candidacy offers the party its strongest chance on the national stage.

However, Obi’s growing influence within the ADC comes amid a crowded field of presidential hopefuls within the party.

The ADC is also home to other high-profile politicians with ambitions for the presidency, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi.

As preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually gather momentum, Obi’s declaration is expected to intensify internal consultations and realignments within the ADC, setting the stage for what could be a highly competitive presidential primary contest.
